For months now, Apple has been rumored to be interested in getting into the 7-inch tablet game. The iPad dominates the 10-inch market, but there’s potential for Apple to enter–and then take over–a segment of the tablet market currently owned by Amazon (with their Kindle Fire) and Google (with their Nexus 7).
It looks like a lock that we’ll see a 7-inch iPad before the end of the year, or in early 2013 at the absolute latest. Whether it will be called the “iPad Mini,” “iPad Nano” or something entirely different (Apple threw the tech blogging world a curveball when it eschewed the name “iPad 3” in favor of “the new iPad” last spring) remains to be seen.
We have a pretty good idea of what it will look like, though.
The photos below, which first appeared on the French website Nowhere Else, show a mock-up of an iPad mini. The photos don’t appear to be a device that was actually manufactured by Apple, but, rather, a device that was put together by a third party based on rumors and leaked information about the upcoming iPad Mini.
Take a look:
As you can see, the iPad Mini fits in one hand, unlike a conventional iPad. It seems to hit a sweet spot in terms of size–one that might be ideal for reading and consuming video either in bed, lying on the couch or while commuting to work.
According to the most recent rumors, Apple is expected to announce the iPad Mini at an event in October.
