About 700 professional football players will lose their jobs today. Guys who have worked their entire lives to make it in the NFL will see their dream come to an end–at least temporarily. It’s the final cut day of the NFL pre-season, a day that requires teams to trim their rosters from 75 players to 53 players. The deadline for cuts is 7 p.m. ET tonight.
Coaches always talk about what a hard day this is, but the truth is that many of them are hardened to this reality. It’s much harder on the young players who have experienced success at all levels of their football career–until now. It’s not an easy thing to come to the realization that your football dreams are going to come up just short. Some players, like former Titans wide receiver OJ Murdoch, who committed suicide earlier this off-season, simply can’t deal with it.
Of the 700 or so players who are cut today, some will move on to a new team and continue chasing their dream. Others will pass through the waivers system and sign to the practice squad of the team that cut them, hoping to make it onto the final roster next season.
Some big names are likely to be cut today. Guys who are near the end of the line and who are no longer more valuable than the youngsters coming up behind them. Guys who are due to be paid too much money to make it worthwhile keeping them around.
We’ll keep you updated about any recognizable names that are given their walking papers today. It’s likely that the most notable cuts won’t come in until later this afternoon and evening. Right now, teams are furiously working the phone, trying to trade the players that they don’t plan on keeping.
As they say, one man’s trash is another’s treasure.
