At this point, Dwight Howard trade rumors are the boy who cried wolf. We’ve heard the same story so many times–the one about how a deal is so close to being done that the ink is pretty much already on the paper–yet, nothing ever gets finalized. You’re forgiven if you take this latest rumor with a huge grain of salt.
A report emerged today that the Los Angeles Lakers are once again on the verge of acquiring Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard. This team, the reported deal is a four-way trade that also includes the Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers.
Supposedly, the Lakers would end up with both Howard and Nuggets forward Al Harrington. The Nuggets would get 76ers forward Andre Iguodala (who’s currently in London with the Dream Team and must love the distraction of his name being brought up in trade rumors). The 76ers would get Lakers center Andrew Bynum. The Magic would end up with Nuggets guard Arron Afflalo and Lakers forward Pau Gasol (also in London). Presumably, there would also be some other players and/or draft picks involved in this deal, in order to even things out (and allow the Magic to dump some more contracts).
The surprise here is that the Magic would get Gasol rather than Bynum. Perhaps Gasol would give them more freedom to trade in a subsequent deal. Maybe they just don’t like Bynum as much as everyone thinks they do/should (they would probably have him already if they really wanted him).
Of course, none of this is set in stone. Until the ink is dry and the trade is official, it’s best to remain skeptical about all rumors involving the name Dwight Howard.
