On Wednesday afternoon, a huge sinkhole appeared on 79th Street in Brooklyn, between 4th and 5th Avenues. Measured at 20 feet by 30 feet, the hole was large enough that it almost swallowed up a parked car.
Experts said that the sinkhole is probably due to some faulty plumbing and pipework underneath the street, though it should be noted that they did not rule out the possibility that the earth might have come to life and decided to eat us all (probably because no one had the guts to ask them this question).
Local mother Annette Flood said that she parked her car next to the sinkhole mere minutes before it opened up. She got out and went inside her home with her daughter, Maddie.
“We’re so blessed,” said Flood. “If we were five minutes later or anything, we could have been in the hole.”
