Sherman Hemsley, the actor who played George Jefferson on the CBS series All In The Family and its spin-off, The Jeffersons, is dead. He was 74.

According to authorities, Hemsley died at his home in El Paso, Texas. He was unmarried and has no children.

In addition to the series mentioned above, Hemsley appeared in numerous other television shows and movies, including E/R, Family Matters, Family Guy and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

When he wasn’t acting, Hemsley had a career in music. His 1989 songe, “Ain’t that A Kick in the Head,” was a minor hit.
