Influx Of Olympic Athletes Causes Gay Dating App Grindr To Crash

The 2012 Summer Olympics start later this week, which means that thousands of athletes from all over the globe are descending on London, England. As we’ve noted before, these athletes are jacked up with hormones and looking for sex. It turns out that a lot of them are looking for sex with a member of their own gender.

The gay dating app Grindr crashed recently. For a period of about 24 hours, the app had no service in London. The suspected reason is the thousands of athletes (and also some fans) who all showed up in London at the same time and started searching for partners. Some athletes were probably looking to hook up with other athletes, whereas others may have been interested in meeting up with a local.

London was already the most popular city on Grindr, with around 350,000 registered users.

Grindr founder Joel Simkhai issued an apology for the outage: “I want to personally apologize to users. “I know it was frustrating. I was frustrated myself. I also rely on Grindr in my day-to-day personal life. It made me feel disconnected.”Our tech team worked around the clock to solve the problems and to whip Grindr back into shape.”
