Rory McIlroy is in the thick of things at the 2012 British Open after the first day of the tournament, but not all his shots went exactly as he planned. At the par four 15th hole at Royal Lytham and St. Annes, his drive veered off to the right and smacked an unsuspecting spectator on the top of the head.
Take a look at the video:
McIlroy’s ball bounced off the fan’s head and into such a bad lie that McIlroy actually decided to go back to the tee box to try his drive again. Either that, or it actually went out of bounds and he had to re-take the shot. It’s not clear from the video.
Before taking another crack at his drive, McIlroy gave the injured fan a signed glove (as he’s done in the past after hitting spectators). While that may seem like small consolation for what is probably a concussion, or at least a splitting headache, it’s all that you can really ask of McIlroy. Golf fans need to be aware of their surrounding at all time. Those who don’t have the presence of mind should wear golf helmets.
