I wanted to offer this yesterday. My apologies for being caught up in some funk.
ESPN’s annual competition of extreme sports kind of got lost in the shuffle this year. With Olympic trial coverage ranging from track and field to swimming to gymnastics on NBC, it was easy to say, “Eh, the X-Games happen every year.”
But something like this…had never happened before. Inspired and sponsored by the classic Hot-Wheels, two rally cars from the Hot-Wheels Racing Team were put on the same track to run a tandem loop–or if you’re truly old school, loop-de-loop. It was one of those things that was a little nerve wracking to watch live. The understanding that everything was expertly planned and rehearsed…but if something happened to go wrong…there was no where it could go but into the amped-up, adoring crowd.
It was flawless, all things considered, and very exciting. I’ve watched it about 12 times. The 7 G’s experienced by the drivers would have been similar to what fighter pilots experience during some high speed air maneuvers, and it took specially manufactured and modified rally cars to handle the force applied from inverted vehicle to inverted roadway. Anyway…enough yappin’! Check out these crazy dudes, and let’s hope that sparks a resurgence in Hot-Wheels sales and production.
