I generally don’t like dumb action movies with cheesy, unrealistic dialogue. Avatar fits that description perfectly, yet I still liked it. Maybe it was because 3D was new and exciting at the time. Maybe it was because there actually was something about the eco-focused story that resonated with me. I don’t know.
Avatar is not a movie that has aged well, however. I enjoyed it at the time, but I definitely never want to watch it again. I was recently at a party and someone put it on the TV. Wow, is that movie ever brutal to watch in non-3D. All the cheesiness is magnified.
Though it smashed records at the box office, I kind of get the impression that the rest of the world agrees with me. Avatar was cool when it was in theaters, but we’re all done with it. We never really want to see it or think about it again.
So, it comes as a mild surprise that Hollywood is working on not one, not two but three Avatar sequels. Three!
Sigourney Weaver has confirmed that all three movies will shoot back-to-back-to back. James Cameron will return as writer-director.
Are there really three more stories to tell in that universe? Didn’t they sufficiently save the planet in the first film? What can happen now?
Also, I guess we now know that Sigourney Weaver’s character, Grace, will be back. Remember that (spoiler alert) Grace dies in the first movie.
