Ann Curry Fired? NBC’s Next Step in Reaching Irrelevancy

Congrats, NBC! You’ve become the most divisive force in all of TV.

Ann Curry, the co-host (though she may not be by the time I finish this post) of the Today Show, along with Matt Lauer, is on the hot seat. It seems that the show has struggled to find a rhythm since Meredith Vieira left her post as Lauer’s microphone and interview buddy just a year ago. The problem? Who knows. It’s NBC. It’s not as if the NBC lineup will ever be accused of being intriguing television. Sure. Kathy Lee Gifford can ask Martin Short about his dead wife, as if the woman is still alive, but people love Kathy Lee. Love her. And that stuff garners ratings. And that’s what it’s all about. Not quality. Not next level. Not progression in the realm of TV. Ratings!

What I think Ann is missing that Meredith had, and Katie Couric had before Meredith, was a particular toeing of the line. The ability to be completely legit–which Ann does expertly–and that slice of creepy cougar–which Ann has never mastered. Meredith and Katie!? Yeah. Creepy cougars. And that’s not always a bad thing. Cats that seem like they’re on the prowl are truly intriguing and entertaining.

Regardless, this is about the fact that NBC can’t take responsibility for the decisions that it makes as a network. The Conan O’Brien Tonight Show debacle was one of the biggest failures in network history. And now they’re going to send another individual packing for their failures as a production staff. Yes. Good Morning America is out-rating the Today Show by leaps and bounds, but they also mix things up and offer the viewers better slices of variety.

All this is to say: NBC…you suck.

  1. Honora Price says:

Ann Curry is miles better than either Couric or Vieira. They should do whatever it takes to hang on to her. She’s smart, she’s credible, she’s experienced, she’s authentic. And, coincidentally, beautiful. What’s wrong with these people who think she’s not good enough?

    • What planet are you from?? Ann Curry can’t carry on an interview without stumbling and stammering. She did fine as long as she reported the news from a teleprompter. She is phony with no natural dialogue ability. I’ve been a Today Show fan for over 20 years but couldn’t bear to watch this disaster!! Thank heavens NBC came to their senses – I just can’t imagine what they were thinking when they put her as co-anchor in the first place!!

  2. Ann can’t do the chirpy fluffy chatty thing. She’s a serious journalist, the anchor that CBS should have hired instead of Katie Couric. Not Ann’s fault. Totally NBC’s. Hope they pay dearly for this fiasco.
