Before he created The Simpsons (and Futurama), Matt Groening wrote and illustrated a comic strip called Life In Hell. He continued to do so while also working on those shows. In fact, he still produces the strip (which runs in alternative weekly newspapers across the country) to this day.
At least, to last Friday. That was the day that the final Life In Hell strip ran. Though papers will continue to run old strips, Groening will no longer be producing new ones.
At its peak, Life In Hell ran in 379 newspapers across the country. It currently runs in just 38. Though the reduction might say more about the decline in the newspaper industry than the decline in interest in Groening’s comic, it probably helped make the decision to end things easier.
Life In Hell features characters named Binky, Bongo, Sheba, Akbar and Jeff. It covers a wide range of topics, from love and sex to work and death.
