It’s a sad time if you’re a fan of the gymnastics pixie, Shawn Johnson. The gold-medal decorated, former Olympic gymnast piqued fan interest when she announced that she would be pushing for a 2012 comeback, and would take a shot at the London games.
Johnson has announced that she will no longer be competing for a spot on the Olympic team, after a 2010 knee injury has continued to take its toll, and continues to prevent her from performing to her potential. The injury occurred while skiing, and resulted in multiple tears, including the ACL, MCL, meniscus and her left hamstring. Violent. Brutal.
Part of me feels like Johnson really pushed to comeback after being criticized for putting on a few pounds post competition. But honesty, where is a little bit of weight going to go on someone who is 18 inches tall? OK. Fine. She’s a whopping 4’9″, but seriously… where’s a little bit of healthy going to go?
Johnson made the announcement now, so people wouldn’t assume that she was still actively pursuing a spot on the Olympic team–she’s hopeful that fans will find some new favorites competing for a spot. This will officially end the gymnastics career of Johnson at the ripe old age of 20.
Of all the popularity Johnson has enjoyed–the medals, accolades and even scoring the Mirrorball Trophy on Dancing With the Stars–there is one body of work that stands out from the rest. That was when she served as a spokesperson for Ortega. Shawn Johnson starred in the best worst commercial ever made. Please. Enjoy.
