Kathie Lee Gifford has said a lot of dumb stuff over the years, but she hit a new low today. In an interview with actor and comedian Martin Short on The Today Show this morning, Gifford asked Short how his relationship with his wife is going. She called it “one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business.”
One problem: Short’s wife died of ovarian cancer in 2010. Awkward!
Short handled the question as best he could but it was clear that he was completely thrown off by Gifford’s simultaneous stupidity and insensitivity.
If you think you can bear to watch this cringeworthy clip, hit play below:
You can see in Short’s eyes that he is not over his wife’s death, nor should anyone expect him to be, because she died so recently. He would have been justified walking off the set or screaming at Gifford for being so clueless, but he soldiered on with the interview like a true pro and a kind human being.
Gifford logged on to Twitter after the show aired to apologize. She posted the following message: “I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.”
