Mary Kennedy, the former wife of Robert Kennedy Jr., was found dead in her home this morning. She was 52. The official cause of death has not been announced, though it is widely speculated that it was a suicide. Sadly, the possibility of accidental overdose would also seem a possibility, given her past.
Mary and Robert Jr. were married for 16 years, before they divorced in 2010. The couple shared 4 children together. Shortly after their divorce was publicized, Mary was arrested for driving under the influence. She left a school carnival, driving erratically and subsequently failed a sobriety test. This time period was also marred with a report of domestic violence from within the Kennedy home–no charges were pressed, and the incident allegedly involved a fight between two of the couple’s children. Such incidents apparently served as a harbinger for things to come.
After Mary was found dead on Wednesday morning, the family released a statement:
We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her. Our heart goes out to her children who she loved without reservation.
Mary withdrew from the spotlight during the divorce.
Robert Kennedy is presently dating actress, Cheryl Hines, who is best known for playing Cheryl on Curb Your Enthusiam.
