Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is a big deal in many nations around the world, but perhaps nowhere more so than in Israel. 67 years ago, the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps were liberated. 6 million died in the holocaust and today we remember them.
In the video below, you get a good look at how seriously some countries take this day. All of the traffic on a freeway comes to a complete stop and people get out of their vehicles (and stand in the middle of the freeway, which seems dangerous) to honor those lost in the Holocaust. They stand in stillness and silense as sirens sound. The scene is surprisingly eerie–it almost looks like something out of a science fiction movie.
Have a look:
According to some commenters who say they have experienced this event in Israel, not all drivers stop to pause in remembrance. Though most do (and all in this video do), some individuals (often Palestinians) continue driving. There is no law requiring people to stop. However, once several cars stop in the middle of the road, the safest thing for everyone to do is to stop.
