“Dragon Tattoo” Sequels may not Happen

By James Sheldon on December 30th, 2011

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is struggling to make ends meet at the American box office.

Was it too soon to embark upon a remake of a popular film that was made just two years ago? Clearly, the Swedish version was already popular enough to hook the eyes of fans of the book trilogy. If you’re a fan of Stieg Larsson’s work, then you more than likely saw the Swedish version–possibly on Netflix, where you can still catch it in the streaming lineup. Sure, David Fincher is at the top of his game, the reader isn’t necessarily the film connoisseur, desirous to see yet another big screen adaptation.

Dare I do this? OK. Put it this way. For Twihards, it’s not as if they would head out and see another version of any of the saga after investing in the first. Could another be better? I don’t see how it couldn’t. But I digress.

The box office results for Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo have been quite shocking and disappointing to say the least. Sure, it’s competing with several other films, some of which are holiday themed–but 13 million over opening weekend? After the millions upon millions spent to market this beast?

One might think that everyone would flock to see whatever Daniel Craig does, especially after “Dragon Tattoo” pumped out one of the best trailers of 2011. Even still, people aren’t seeing it.

I haven’t. But I plan to. And I’m under the impression that a lot of people feel this way. I think studio execs signed off on a terrible release for what has been lauded as a fantastic film.

Of course, there is the foreign market to consider, where Daniel Craig possesses even more power than he does stateside, but there is simply no guarantee of success. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
