It’s finally wrapped up. The singing competition that held America only slightly captive has wound to a close and crowned the new recipient of a five-million dollar record contract.
And that recipient is none other than Melanie Amaro, 19 year-old Floridian transplant from the Virgin Islands. Congratulations to her! Now she’s going to have to wade through the entire mess of what it means to have a record contact in this day and age, and the perils of being on Simon Cowell’s Syco Label. They include being dumped, not being able to sustain the public’s interest outside of a fighting song competition, not having access to good material (songwriters either withholding or all the good material going to established artists) not capturing the public’s attention, and generally being contractually obligated and chained to Simon Cowell, only allowing him to decide your fate and what happens next to you.
Previous winners of the X-Factor had the notable distinction of dropping off the face of the earth, and producing one international star in the form of Leona Lewis. Who has now dropped off the face of the earth, after providing the vocals to Avatar’s theme.
So congrats Melanie, but the work is never over. You have an incredible voice, so keep on grinding.
