Matt Barkley to Wait on NFL, Return to USC

By James Sheldon on December 22nd, 2011

Matt Barkley will return to USC for his senior season.

It seems Barkley wants a little bit of college hardware, and at present, and as it stands it’s looking as if he would be the third quarterback taken in the 2012 NFL draft. This move makes sense. This will certainly make him the first quarterback taken in 2013 if he continues to strut as he did this season, and it will offer him opportunity to lead the Heisman race and compete for a BCS National Championship.

Considering the year that USC had while serving their penalties, they should be the odds on favorite to win the PAC-12 in 2012. With Barkley rolling confidently into a senior season, USC should also be an easy AP Top 3 when the preseason rankings are dropped in August. Care to venture a guess as to which teams will be 1 and 2? I’m going with 1. LSU 2. Alabama 3. USC … and I like USC to run the table in the PAC-12.

Lane Kiffin motivated the boys well this season, with little to play for other than bragging rights and the opportunity to play spoiler on a couple of occasions. After an interesting start to the season, it seemed that the whole of the squad bought in, and once they were all in, Lane and Monte had the boys playing stellar ball.

With Barkley making his announcement, NFL squads will now look to Stanford senior QB Andrew Luck and Baylor senior QB Robert Griffin III as the quarterback class of 2012. Oklahoma State senior QB Brandon Weeden will also create some intrigue, depending on his combine performance. The same could be said of OU junior Landry Jones, but it would greatly behoove Jones to stick around for his senior season.

In the meantime, you heard it here first. 1. LSU 2. Alabama 3. USC to push into the fall of 2012.
