NBC and NFL Will Stream Super Bowl Online

By James Sheldon on December 20th, 2011

We keep getting closer and closer to creating the largest single holiday event in American history without actually calling the day a holiday. Super Bowl Sunday is iconic. It is uniquely American. Regardless of whether you love or hate football, you’ll party on Super Bowl Sunday. You’ll go somewhere, enjoy the atmosphere, food, drinks and at the very least, criticize or enjoy the commercials.

Owning the rights to the 2012 February NFL throwdown, NBC has agreed to terms with the NFL to stream the game live. Sure, the game has been streamed live before…but this is actually legal.

The online streaming options will be offered through NBC.com, NFL.com and the NFL Verizon app. This will effectively make Super Bowl XLVI the most watched sporting event in history.

Not only is this an impressive move by the NFL, but Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association should take note. The NFL is destroying your business models, even with an egomaniac serving as commissioner. As much as I facepalm and roll my eyes at Roger Godell, I gotta pat the guy on the back for offering any sway in this direction.

If you have never watched an NBC Sunday Night Football broadcast via live streaming online, it is really quite impressive. If your bandwidth possesses some pop, you’ll enjoy the features offered through the streaming interface. Choose camera views, enjoy DVR style controls and watch the game from work if you get shafted into the Sunday night shift.

Sure, HD on 60-plus inches is preferable, but it may be worth checking out just to compare the Internet ads vs. televised ads.
