NTSB Suggests Nationwide Cellphone ban

By James Sheldon on December 14th, 2011

What would you think about a total ban on the use of cellphones while driving? That’s precisely what the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) is recommending. A recommendation that has been suggested for all 50 states in the union.

I know blue toothers will immediately disagree, but it’s tough to argue with the logic. The last thing we need as distracted drivers are more distractions.

Many have set their cellphones aside while traveling on public roadways. Others continue to talk, text and enjoy their many web applications while driving. It’s really one of my favorite things to witness…possibly one of yours. Nothing like seeing someone rear-end someone else because they’re texting.

Most of us probably fit into the “hands-free is OK” category. Even still, I have witnessed little change since the no talk or text with a handheld device bill was put into California law. Every trek through beautiful, downtown Burbank there are still those who roll through town like their phone is glued to their hand. Just can’t put that thing down. They do have special powers after all.

If the DOT takes the advice of the NTSB, and pushes an agenda through Congress or through all state legislators, I hope that such law, or laws, will come with legit punishment, as opposed to a simple opportunity to score more money from citizens in an effort to plug budgetary gaps. If research suggests that it is a legit safety issue, then let punishment fit the crime.
