Well, it looks like Deidre Pujols and Dan Lozano have decided where Albert Pujols will play baseball for the remainder of his career. Anaheim.
I’m a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. I’m not bitter. I’m a little disappointed. But it seemed obvious as to what was about to happen, when Albert continued to drag his feet. His feelings had been hurt by the front office–even though he was the one who killed all negotiations during the season.
At that, he’ll make comparable numbers when considering the St. Louis offer of 220/10. The 250/10 will be chewed up by the high cost of living in CA, as well as the taxes in the state. California is so broke, the various taxes bleed you like a vampire. Digressing.
In addition to Albert Pujols, the Angels offered a boatload of cash to left hander C.J. Wilson from Texas–a bona fide choke artist. Angels fans will love this guy. Just ask the fans of the Texas Rangers who rolled out the red carpet for him to leave town.
Does everyone remember when Detroit acquired Cabrera, and the whole of the baseball fan world thought they’d be untouchable? Yep. You’ll see the same thing go down in Anaheim. Mike Scioscia is one heck of a manager, but now you’re running around the AL with a monster target. Rarely do you see moves like this work toward the betterment of a team. Didn’t work in basketball for Miami. Didn’t work in football for Philadelphia. It’s just not how you build a winner.
My question to Angels fans. How do you re-sign Jared Weaver when it’s time? How do you re-sign anyone? You don’t. You play them to their baseball graves. Just look at the Yankees. It doesn’t work like this. Never has. But enjoy having Albert in town. He’s a great guy, and will be very involved in the local community.
