Study Shows Men No Longer Think About Sex Every 7 Seconds

A study conducted at Ohio State University has shown that men only think about sex an average of 19 times a day, which is not nearly as much as the average urban myth would have you believe.  Most people use the “once every 7 seconds” theory but that has now been dis-proven.

A group of 160 women and 120 men was broken down into smaller groups of 59, 61, and 163, who were then asked to record how often they thought about food, sleep, and sex respectively.  The results showed that the men thought about sex between 1 and 388 times a day, with the average being 19. Thoughts about sex just barely edged out food, which clocked in at 18 times per day.  The study did show that, generally, men do think about sex almost twice as much as women, who averaged just 10 thoughts about sex per day.

Professor Terri Fisher, the author of the study, believes that the outrageous number of 8,000 was mostly due to poorly conducted tests, which relied heavily on participants trying to remember how often they thought about sex, rather than monitoring their thought process as it happened.

“What we found was so far away from this strongly held stereotype,” she said, citing non-scientific estimates that have men pondering sex 8,000 times in 16 waking hours. “For men to grow up being told that men think about nothing but sex, I think, is discrediting toward men.”

Fisher also stated: “What is clear is it’s not uniquely sex that they’re spending more time thinking about, but other issues related to their biological needs, as well.”

Fisher said she plans to extend the study into older adults, as women don’t reach their sexual prime until their 30s. Men, conversely, reach their sexual peak in their college years.

“Yet these males were still not sex-obsessed,” said Fisher. “They clearly did not come anywhere close to thinking about sex every seven seconds.”

Well there you have it.  Men don’t think about sex as much as we have been lead to believe.
