Nicolas Cage’s Copy of Action Comics #1 Sells For Record Millions

By Jeremy Suede on November 30th, 2011

In 1938, Superman made his first appearance in Action Comics #1 and the world was never the same.  Since then he has been the star of numerous TV shows, movies, cartoons and every other medium out there.  That first issue is one of the Holy Grails in the comic book universe and somebody just paid a boat-load of money to have one of the few remaining copies in their collection.  It was just sold at auction for $2.1 million and the new owner is not letting their identity be known (just yet hopefully).

Last year another copy of the same issue was sold at auction for a mere $1.5 million.  That one didn’t have the same history though.  This most recent one belonged to actor Nicolas Cage and was famously stolen from him and found recently in a vacant storage garage.  So the notoriety may have helped raise the value.

“The buyer was extremely excited about the prospect of bidding on this. I think he had an adrenalin rush for the last two hours. As soon as he won it, he gave me a call and thanked me. He’s very excited to have it. This is a guy who loves owning the best of the best,” said ComicConnect COO Vincent Zurzolo to the The Washington Post.

Whoever he is, he has a boat load of money to spend on a 73-year-old comic book.  Who do you think it is and would you ever spend that kind of money on a comic book, or on anything for that matter?
