Sorry Florida Gators fans. You feel a bit wounded. Or feel like someone poured salt in a wound that had nearly healed… It’s understandable. But don’t take it personally. This is what coaches do. They coach football. No university is bigger than the game itself. The sooner you pocket that fact, the more you can enjoy each and every Saturday.
Don’t doubt what Urban Meyer accomplished in Gainesville–without him at the helm, you don’t enjoy those Tebow years the way that you did…with 2 championships, and an absurd amount of wins over a four year span. So. Whatever bitterness you have about Meyer taking the position at Ohio State, let it go. Do you think LSU fans are still bitter at Nick Saban? OK. Bad example.
Urban Meyer was destined to end up in his native Ohio. He himself was a defensive back for the Cincinnati Bearcats in the 1980s, and the Big 10 and Midwestland is the right life speed for Meyer. The flavor isn’t gator and southern spice–it’s more ground beef and cheese. In other words, the SEC was too much for Urban Meyer. That’s not a bad thing. Being a high motor guy, there was no way to sustain the SEC beat down year after year after year…but at Ohio State? There’s one game annually that pushes the limits–the Ohio State v. Michigan rivalry game.
Possessing his reputation, his ability to recruit and his offensive system, Meyer is a perfect fit for domination in the Big 10. While Gators fans may wronged, there’s not an Ohio State fan who isn’t beside themselves with excitement at the university’s new hire. Meyer has the ability to do something that Jim Tressel could never do with the crew from Columbus–win consistently vs. the SEC.
Meyer is a perfect fit for the Buckeyes. He’ll quickly return the football program to national prominence, dismiss the nonsense of the recent past, and roll through the Big 10 toward the BCS year after year.
