Anne McCaffrey Dies

By Mark Lorenz on November 24th, 2011

A living legacy of science fiction writing has just transitioned her way into the great void. Anne McCaffrey, creator of the Pern series of books, and friend to anyone who ever wore armor and pretended to ride a dragon – has passed away.

No word as to whether or not her body will be protected by watchweyrs or bronze dragons, or she’ll be serving klah at her funeral, but one thing was certain – she was a Grand Master of science fiction. She left a legacy behind that included over 100 novels, which included the Pern series numbering over 22 books, the ‘Crystal Singer’ and ‘Donna’ series – all because her first effort in 1967 was written as a protest to the flimsy portrayal of women in other sci-fi series.

Her Pern book series was written over a period of forty years. You can probably count on your hand the number of people who’ve created their own world and then provided themselves a income enthralling people with that. McCafferey was one.

She was also an influence on future generations of fantasy authors, especially females like Mercedes Lackey – who went on to be one of the best-selling authors in the genre in history.

Rest in peace, Anne.
