Benetton Kissing Ads Rile The World

By Mark Lorenz on November 17th, 2011

If there’s one thing the world needs unequivocally, it’s less people bickering with each other and more people kissing. An ad that’s reflective of that is catching heat, though, as it portrays world leaders making out with each other.

What’s wrong with that? They’re making out with enough people on the side, I’m sure that in REAL LIFE their tongues and faces come into contact with a few heads of state, and staff on the side. The issue isn’t that leaders are kissing, it’s an effective campaign. The issue is that leaders like the pope are kissing, and if there’s anything that the pope stands for, it’s a moratorium on physical affection. The pope won’t stand for that. Included pairings are Sarkozy kissing Angela Merkel, Netanyahu kissing Mahmoud Abbas, and the pope kissing a leading imam.

If it’s just Photoshop, world leaders need to deal with it. We’ve all been photoshopped doing way worse things than kissing other world leaders. The Vatican didn’t think so, however, and issued an aggressive statement.

“This is a grave lack of respect for the pope, an offense against the sentiments of the faithful and a clear example of how advertising can violate elementary rules of respect for people in order to attract attention through provocation.”

But seriously, folks. Buy Benetton. They’ve already got you talking.
