‘Community’ Shelved By NBC

By Mark Lorenz on November 15th, 2011

Guess what, television lovers? Community is going to be off the air pretty quickly. Sucks, doesn’t it? Roll that around in your heads. Absorb that in your brain. Community will be cancelled soon.

The series, which started three years ago, has developed a rabid internet fanbase and that’s about it. The internet doesn’t keep shows alive, as you might’ve learned through rabid campaigns to save ‘Arrested Development’. Wait, what? That one’s coming back? Good on you, internet. But if everyone who had a Tumblr account and posted about how much they loved Troy and Abed or how Annie and Jeff shouldn’t be together as a couple, banded together and got themselves a couple of Nielson boxes – maybe we wouldn’t be in this situation. Maybe we’d be enjoying another few seasons of Community.

NBC has benched the show in their upcoming schedule, proving to the world that even with a lot of internet buzz, if you write a show with characters that aren’t grounded with plotlines and visual elements cribbed from other sources instead of something just stupidly earnest like CBS sitcoms, you’re going to eventually eat it.

And it’s sad. Community had potential. May it rest on the shelf in peace. More saddening? NBC is keeping Whitney Cummings on the air.
