Joe Paterno era at Penn State is Over

By James Sheldon on November 8th, 2011

A little extra for the absurd scandal that has been uncovered within the Penn State football program. I wrote about this yesterday, and will write about it today…then, no mas.

For years, folks have cried for the retirement or “politely forced retirement” of the legendary football coach–who would have thought that when Paterno’s contract was not renewed that it would be due to sexual scandal. No, Joe Paterno is not guilty of the acts of sexual abuse at the center of this controversy, but it is factual that Coach Paterno has known of these allegations for nearly a decade, and yet nothing was done.

If you offer sympathy for the devil, you could argue that Joe Pa couldn’t wrap his mind around what he had been told about his former defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky–the man who is accused of having inappropriate sexual relationships with underage boys. That JoePa couldn’t quite comprehend the probability of truth that was hiding within his illustrious football program.

I’m gonna chase a white rabbit for a second, here.

Forget players getting busted for fighting (LSU), players getting busted for receiving improper benefits (Miami, Ohio State)…forget what you know as scandal, and what the NCAA likes to parade as wrongdoing. This is legitimate wrongdoing, and will the NCAA punish this? Are there any rules against this? Sure, associated parties may spend some time in jail, and perhaps Sandusky will get his fill in the clink–if you know what I’m saying–but this is a classic case of how these programs are protected and exposed in all the wrong ways.

Joe Paterno’s weekly news conference that was scheduled for today has been cancelled, and it won’t be rescheduled. Honestly, you think PSU is going to allow their 84 year old head coach get up there and ramble through discomfort?

Paterno’s exit is inevitable. It’s merely a matter of deciding whether he’s allowed to finish the season, or if the university will try prove to their disgust by telling him to pack up and get out immediately.
