Jerry Sandusky Casts Dark Shadow on Penn State

By James Sheldon on November 7th, 2011

This story is another in the category of how difficult it must be to do the right thing when you know that it would cost you everything.

Jerry Sandusky, former Penn State defensive coordinator, and right hand man of legendary Joe Paterno, is the focal point of an investigation that involves child sexual abuse. Sandusky is accused of having abusive relationships with 8 underage boys–everything from inappropriate touching to statutory rape.

In 2002, a 28 year old graduate assistant claimed to have witnessed Sandusky sodomizing a young boy in the shower of the Lasch Football Building. The grad student met with Joe Paterno the next day. According to Paterno, the graduate student did meet with him, spoke of wrongdoing, but never expressed details of what he saw–that the witness was very distraught. Sandusky was not on staff at the time, and was apparently giving a tour to an at risk youth from the charity he founded. After meeting with the grad assistant/coach, Joe Paterno contacted the school’s athletic director, Tim Curley and Curley called in university vice president Gary Schultz.

A week later they met with the graduate assistant, and after their meeting…they never contacted the authorities. Curley and Schultz have both recently resigned and they are in hot water. They are being arraigned today for grand perjury.

Joe Paterno continues to remain a witness, and is not a target of the investigation.
