Universal’s President Admits ‘We Make A Lot Of Shitty Movies’

By Mark Lorenz on November 5th, 2011

In a move usually reserved for highly trained PR flacks, the man in charge of Universal’s movie division is coming out and saying what everyone’s been thinking for a number of years – they make shitty movies. And a lot of them.

Universal is the company that owns NBC, so by extension, they also make a lot of shitty television shows – but we’re going to leave that for another time when you feel up to reading about how terrible ‘The Playboy Club’ and most of their fall schedule has been for the last three years running. Ron Meyer, President and Chief Operating Officer of Universal Studios was doing a speech at Savannah College of Art and Design.

“We make a lot of shitty movies. Every one of them breaks my heart.”

He then went on to mention how terrible Land of the Lost and Cowboys and Aliens were, both monumental bombs that put a chunk in the profit margins of the movie giant. Why is he mentioning this now? Does he have some sort of obligation? Want to speak the truth before he gets ousted by stockholders?

Better yet, maybe Ron Meyer is just a cool guy, and wanted to set the record straight. Bravo. Universal’s latest offering, Tower Heist, opened today.
