Google is doing the thing that more tech conglomerates need to do — exhibiting and showcasing their sense of humor. Usually that’s hard to do when you’re worth billions, as evidenced by Donald Trump.
But today on Google’s search bar, visitors got themselves a treat. When typing the magical phrase ‘do a barrel roll’, visitors were treated to watch the search bar do just that. What’s the significance? It’s an old internet meme. Inspired by Sar Fox, the game crafted by Nintendo where in a distant universe in the future, foxes and other woodland creatures could successfully pilot advanced hunks of machinery. In the beginning of the game, you’re taught by Peppy, an enthusiastic rabbit, how to ‘do a barrel roll’. It protects you from harm. Google’s trick is a lot like that, only it protects you from not smiling.
Remember when internet searching was a thing of the future, that we could barely comprehend? Me too. Remember when it started becoming art? Apparently sometime within the last four years.
There are other tricks that the Google search bar has been programmed to do other than doing barrel rolls, like extracting personal data from you and saving your search results, but let’s all just admire the cute trick for now.
