Harold Camping Resigns for False Predictions

By James Sheldon on November 2nd, 2011

If there was anything good to come out of Harold Camping’s “End of the World” predictions in 2011, maybe it’s that the man is finally displaying some genuine humility?

I’ll consider this the 3rd part of the Camping trilogy. The final chapter of an interesting 2011 that included the May 21st spiritual rapture, the October 21st end of the world and Harold Camping’s instructions for Family Radio employees to avoid speaking to the media, followed by his resignation.

Talk about a bad year for Family Radio and founder Harold Camping. Sure. There are those who will read this who don’t believe in God, and those who do. But what is it about the few who think they’re privy to schedule of the Almighty? The Alpha and Omega? There seems to be a unique arrogance within such a mindset.

What was really interesting about this whole story–Camping had a stroke following his May 21st debacle. He apologized for his harsh, judgmental stance on those who wouldn’t buy into his prediction, and was very apologetic to those who did; yet he stood by the possibility that the world would end pre-Halloween.

After everyone was able to play dress up and candy hoarder there was little left for Camping to say. He offered an interview to a documentary filmmaker in October, stating that the whole thing was pretty embarrassing for Family Radio, and that he was sorry for making certain statements that he did.

Don’t be so hard on yourself Harold–the vast majority wasn’t buying what you were selling anyway…enjoy the millions that you were able to collect, and perhaps you can throw a little retirement party with all of your supporters.
