Puss In Boots To Win The Weekend With Record

By Mark Lorenz on October 29th, 2011

There is something to be said about our love for cats.  We don’t care if they’re talking, we don’t care if the movie’s middling,  we want to see them wear hats and fight people.

The threshold of our love of cats was entirely evident this weekend when DreamWorks released the modern spin-off of Shrek, Puss In Boots. Puss, voiced by Antonio Banderas, is joined by a cadre of familiar actors including Selma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Amy Sedaris — featuring characters from popular fairy tales such as Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill, and a female cat that they needed to introduce as a counterpart to Puss. Dreamworks must be pleased — as records for Halloween weekend are going to be broken if the feisty cat-movie can claw up to 35 million dollars… impressive feat for a movie that started in development in 2004. What was up against Puss in Boots?

‘Paranormal Activity 3′ is scooping up a ton of money overseas, and there’s really no other competition from any other end. Johnny Depp’s labor of love, ‘The Rum Diary’ opened to similar box-office numbers as ‘Fear and Loathing’ did, landing it squarely in fifth place and hoping to find an audience once it hits DVD.

Morals to draw from this? We love cats. Love them.
