War In Iraq Over?

Wow. Just, wow. Obama’s had a good few weeks.

It’s been nine years since we began ground operations in Iraq, in a costly war that wound up taking trillions of dollars away from our economy, stretching our debt out incredibly, and the families of hundreds of soldiers. But now, according to President Obama, the troops will be back home by the holidays.

Considering what a drawn-out nightmare of a scenario that operation and nation building turned out to be, can you imagine a time where we’d have US troops no longer involved in Iraq? It’s been happening for nearly a decade now.

I’m sure there will be people trying to spin this into some kind of story where Obama was neglectful or other people were pulling more weight than he was – but it’s a long end to a conflict that didn’t need to happen in the first place and sapped all of our pockets for the available gold we had.

Negotiations were happening between the Iraqi government and the US over how long our troops needed to stay and what kind of presence we should maintain, but it’s lovely that they eventually decided that the troops deserved to be at home to unwrap presents and see their children.

Over a million people have been engaged in ground operations in Iraq.
