Harry Belafonte, one of the best entertainers to grace the United States, and the man who popularized music that or is it otherwise wouldn’t get much attention — appeared on Stephen Colbert last night and provided quite the show. He caused a ruckus, even.
Not a ruckus in traditional sense — a ruckus that it’s fast becoming tradition on a show that sports the most delightful traditions on television. Belafonte was there to promote his book, ‘My Song’, a celebrity memoir that ties in everybody from RFK, Martin Luther King, Frank Sinatra and the other most prominent entertainers in his day. Whilst on the show, he described his political beliefs and his personal mission to lift up people in communities that don’t have anybody else to lift them up — all wonderful things — but everyone wanted to see Belafonte show off his pipes.
I would be entirely too disappointed if an interview with Harry Belafonte didn’t end in some type of song. The most enjoyable part of this? Even Stephen Colbert seems like the favorite part of his day is when he gets to sing with people who are national icons.
Belafonte’s book, ‘My Song’ is in stores now. Run out and grab a copy.
