Tony Bennett Is Now The Oldest Artist With A Billboard Hit

By Mark Lorenz on September 24th, 2011

Tony Bennett is on top of the world right now.

He’s  flying high, enjoying success late into his life that his contemporaries never got to enjoy — because they croaked early on and moved to the great beyond. He’s still down here crooning with his heart and soul. Bennett is an icon of American music whose career has had peaks and valleys, lived in the decades where Dean Martin and the Rat Pack ruled, and now he’s now the oldest artist to ever have a song grace the Billboard 100 — on his album Duets II. The song? ‘Body and Soul’, the duet that he did with Amy Winehouse. His album was the last place the world got to hear the beautiful voice of Amy Winehouse — it’s only fitting that since she was unable to release an album featuring her voice but somebody else did it got the kind of success she deserved. Other than that duet, the album featured assorted artists that ranged from  Lady Gaga to John Mayer. The last record holder for oldest entry on the Billboard charts? George Burns. Somehow got on the charts for his single, ‘I Wish I Was Eighteen Again,’ recorded when Burns was a year younger than Bennett.

Congratulations Tony Bennett — you deserve all the success in the world the world. Your music made waking up for me in the morning so much easier because I think I’m being chased by a dulcet toned Italian man in my dreams.
