There is no Protection for Michael Vick

There is no protection for Michael Vick…or any other quarterback in the NFL. Regardless of the league’s desire to protect the faces of the franchise, last night’s freak pop of one of the NFL’s elite offered all the proof in the puddin’.

When you play in the NFL, you play at your own risk–no rule is going to protect any player. Sure, if you’re Mike Vick, you wish you were playing behind Tom Brady’s line, but every QB is going to take their fair share of hits.

While a lot of people were engaged in a viewing of last night’s Emmy Awards, many more were interested in Michael Vick’s return to the Georgia Dome to face his former team, the Atlanta Falcons.

The game itself was exactly what it was billed to be–a heavyweight fight. Two NFC powers enjoying the battle of momentum, scoring and being scored on.

It is no secret to anyone, Michael Vick’s offensive line has done a poor job of protecting him this season–you could argue that they’ve sucked. The holes were immediately evident in the preseason. The concern for Vick were the repeated shots he was taking from defenders, and the future fear was the singular shot that would sideline him for a significant chunk of the season. The hit came…from his own offensive lineman. Talk about adding insult to injury.

Spun down by a tackler, Vick was met face to face with a much larger man–his own OT, Todd Herremans. Vick took the brunt of the blow, leaving him with a bloody mouth and a rattled brain. Even with the diagnosis of a mild concussion, the Philly medical team is reluctant to rule Vick out for Week 3. (Yeah, right…)

This is exactly what the league doesn’t want to see. All the rules put in place to protect the quarterback, and the quarterbacks are still getting banged, busted and leaving games with concussions.
