What’s mightier, a gosling or a lion? This weekend proved the answer.
You might’ve think the demand for Simba was buried dead – deader than Mufasa (spoilers?), after more than a decade of Lion King musicals, poor straight-to-video sequels, and the hammering of the popular retelling of Hamlet into our popular consciousness. But turns out, people still want to watch lions talking to each other, which is what I imagine the impetus for the creation of Animal Planet was. The Lion King in 3D was a boom for business – raking in 29.3 million dollars over the weekend, as people watched Hakuna Matata fly right at their face.
Expectations for the weekend weren’t that high, and The Lion King smashed them. Rounding out the spots underneath were Contagion and Drive, both movies that underperformed – despite Drive winning tip honors at Cannes. The film will easily recoup the miniscule budget it was made on.
But how bout those lions, huh? We can now expect every major animation studio to re-release the movies they had done back in the day in 3D in theaters. So expect every Disney movie to come straight at your head like Walt Disney would with a club, provided you were wearing a yarmulke.
