Eddie Murphy Rumored To Be Oscar Host?

By Mark Lorenz on September 6th, 2011

That would be an interesting way to force him back onto a stage.

The Oscars has been a godawful slog for the last two years of various Hollywood types trying to mask the fact that they don’t know how to capture a giant audience base. Ratings have been consistently on a downward slope, hosts have been panned for being charisma blankets in warm tuxedos, and they’ve done things like open up the best picture category to ten films – all in an effort to draw more viewers in. Really, what they need to do to draw more viewers in is get movie stars that have actual charisma. Or that movies that are as bad as AVATAR deserve to be nominated for Best Picture, simply because they printed money.

But the Oscars may go in a different direction this year, with rumors that producer Brett Ratner will be bringing Eddie Murphy onboard to do hosting duties. Being that the last time Eddie Murphy appeared at the Oscars was to storm out after he lost for Dreamgirls, I doubt it’s actually going to come to fruition.

It WOULD be hilarious if the person who turned out to be the greatest host of the Oscars, the whitest ceremony in existence, wasn’t Billy Crystal — but Eddie Murphy.

We can dream.
