Nobody cares about remakes, or things in superfluous 3D – especially headed into a new school year. The movies released this weekend have tanked.
Which means a lot – people were counting on Conan to storm the box-office, or even Spy Kids 4D to hold on with their obvious gimmick of a movie being in Smell-O-Vision…but what held the top spot was good ol’ fashioned storytelling, The Help finished as the CLEAR frontrunner, taking the top spot held by The Rise of The Planet Of The Apes last week — holding strong at 20 million dollars. Everyone else? Finished below 15 million dollars. 30 Minutes Or Less also didn’t have an uptick, an irony considering how Aziz Ansari would go on radio shows making fun of the people who’d watch The Final Destination franchise.
Conan finished with 10 million dollars, despite an onslaught of publicity, Spy Kids with 12 million dollars, Fright Night with 7. Box-office analysts have called the performances of the new releases ‘gutless’.
If you were hoping for Conan to rip out the intestines of Emma Stone with his masculine and well-defined Hawaiian arms, you just were thwarted by the impending return of kids to school.
And keep giving Viola Davis movies – she can out-act anyone we’ve been throwing on screen.
