Conan’s Show In Trouble?

By Mark Lorenz on August 21st, 2011

It would be so, so sad if our televisions didn’t feature Conan’s signature red hair and wacky characters – but the people at TBS are starting to be concerned.

Conan got shafted worse on NBC than any talk show host in history – which is impressive considering NBC’s extensive resume of shafting talk-show hosts. That period where Conan was messing with NBC in the time before he had to hand the reigns back to Jay ‘I’m a giant douche’ Leno produced some of the most aggressive and timely sketches that have ever aired on late-night television. Now, with the exit of George Lopez, some suits at TBS are talking about how Conan isn’t drawing the ratings that they want. Since moving into Lopez’s timeslot, George’s ratings dropped so badly that TBS canned him – his terrible on-air demeanor and material didn’t help either.

But ratings for Conan have dropped 60% since his debut. I’ve watched. It isn’t the same kind of team that propelled him to such massive success at NBC – it’s a gentler, breezier Conan – but definitely not as funny.

Who knows if the rumors are just those, but it’d be sad if Conan didn’t have a place on television. What else would he do?
