Niagara Falls Claims Canadian Victim

By James Sheldon on August 15th, 2011

Update: After more details emerged, it was revealed that the victim was 19 year old female student from Japan, who was studying in Canada.

It’s tragic. People going over waterfalls, and being crushed to death or drowning–it just seems that we should be beyond these accidental deaths. How do you make sense of it?

If you’re unaware, three individuals went over Vernal Fall at Yosemite National Park less than a month ago–swept away in the Merced River after hoping to enjoy a photo op. The shallows move rapidly atop Vernal Fall, and the river rock is smooth and slick. Many are fooled into believing they can safely navigate the shallow water. One met distress, another tried to help and joined in that distress and a third went in after them, trying to save one or both. Witnesses stated that they went over the raging fall, screaming, clutched in each other’s arms.

The latest waterfall tragedy occurred at Niagara, and involved what was supposed to be a simple visit to the falls on the Canadian side. Two women–students in their 20s–from the Toronto area were visiting the falls. One decided to climb the railing about 80 feet upstream of the falls. She was seated on a rock pillar anchoring the railing, while straddling the rail. When she stood up to adjust position, she slipped and fell into the river below. The current swept her over.

Like two of the most recent waterfall victims in Yosemite, the victim in the Niagara accident has not yet been found. A search and recovery team is attempting to recover the young woman’s body.

Could it possibly be that all the facts weren't available at the time I wrote it? Did I offend you, eh?

@Neel Correct, she was from Japan, but you're a disgusting excuse for a human. Calling the deceased an idiot is just beyond disrespectful.
