For a long time, Johnny Depp has talked about a grand idea to re-make the Lone Ranger, a television series that only the elderly and Johnny Depp care about – specifically to make the treatment of Tonto, his Indian sidekick better.
Yes. An entire movie just to highlight white guilt – that’s exactly what we need in this environment of sequels and re-makes. A remake JUST exclusively to correct the injustices of the past…which would be great, if anybody cared about the Lone Ranger. Does anyone know anything about the Lone Ranger? Other than the fact that he had a sidekick and a mask? Why was this even a priority for Disney?
The reason for the production’s halt? The budget was going to be 250 million dollars. That’s right, a movie about a forgotten television/radio star was going to cost more than Titanic. Or Thor. Or any superhero movie that happened lately – you could combine two budgets and it’d still be less than the Lone Ranger.
This supports my theory that even though everyone likes Johnny Depp – the man doesn’t know how to balance his checkbook. We can only assume he was going to spend the extra 100 million to build an island.

That is cuckoo-nutty! I loved watching LR reruns as a kid. I know more about him than the two tidbits you mention, and I wouldn't mind a rousing remake as some mindless Summer entertainment. However, it shouldn't cost more than the recent True Grit remake did. I don't know what Depp had in mind, but maybe it involved aliens?
