Everything about the 90’s and the oughties is coming back in full force – including Mike Meyer’s beloved creation Austin Powers.
It started as a sharp satire of the James Bond series, turned into a franchise, and then went all out – hiring Beyonce, Tom Cruise, and Britney Spears in the final installment. And as it went on and on, it got worse and worse – but the first two films still stand up as a testament to the ridiculous throne Meyers inherited from the creators of Airplane! The last one managed to gross 296 million dollars worldwide, despite being mercilessly hammered by critics. So it should come as no surprise to everyone after the Love Guru bombed so horribly that Meyers would want to do something that could resurrect his career.
That something is a fourth installment of Austin Powers. Written by Meyers, directed by Jay Roach – the fourth film would be Meyers first return to the screen since Inglorious Basterds.
He’s been sitting and rolling around in all that Shrek money. He has to have made tens of millions from the film series, so good for him.
Personally, I will always think that the first movie is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in my life.
