Poor guy. Nobody deserves to die alone in a Comfort Inn in Woodland Hills. That’s a fate worse than WASP.
Warrant was one of the big-named hair bands of the 80’s, making adolescents hearts throb with the ‘Cherry Pie’ video and rocking the hits ‘Down Boys’ and ‘Heaven’. Their lead singer, Jani Lane was the principal songwriter – but after the grunge revolution of the 1990’s, they were segmented into the realm of has-beens and pushed into the touring schedules of forgotten backroom bars. Jani Lane left the group in 1992, only to return off and on for the next 19 years.
Lane was an incredibly talented songwriter that the record industry pigeonholed – he resented the success of the Cherry Pie music video and was battling demons for years. Lane also appeared on Celebrity Fit Club on VH1 – but he’d be battling a drinking problem for years, reportedly showing up at gigs unintelligible and belligerent, and being arrested for drunk driving.
Causation of death hasn’t been established yet – here’s hoping it was of entirely natural causes at the age of 47. Poor guy. The Comfort Inn is no way to go out, especially for a life that brought joy to so many people.
Rest in peace.
