They’re Remaking Dirty Dancing?

By Mark Lorenz on August 8th, 2011

This is unnecessary. Completely unnecessary. I don’t know whether or not to just be irritated at Hollywood for being completely unoriginal or more at the fact they’re not buying new stories for fear of losing an audience.

Cowboys and Aliens tanked at the box office, being beaten out by The Smurfs – a sad state of affairs when a remake that’s absolutely savaged by critics beats out a movie that at least made the old college try at telling an original story – but that’s just one instance of myriad where commerce is taking art by the side of the road and beating it about the face until it won’t get up again. The latest?

They’re going to remake Dirty Dancing. With the director of High School Musical. High School Musical, if you’ve never saw it is the most inexplicably successful series to be targeted towards teens. All of its stars were supposed to find major footing in Hollywood and move on to storied career, now it looks like the only notable person to emerge from it is Vanessa Hudgens.

It’s almost as if Hollywood is trashing all of their old productions by fooling itself into believing what made them special and unique is re-creatable.

It’s not. Don’t support the practice. Vote with your wallets.
