And half….uh, spider? I’m no good with fractions. Or superheroes, mostly. Mostly I’m good with drinking V8.
Spiderman is having exciting things happen to him – there’s ANOTHER new movie based off of his mythos, telling the story about how he got bitten by a radioactive spider and transformed into an ever-recharging franchise that people will get sick of, and he’s in the news again for a racial issue. Oh, that Spiderman. He can’t help himself, he needs people to know how inclusive and wonderful he is.
In an alternate Spiderman universe, Peter Parker dies – probably crushed under the weight of how emo his haircut is. Marvel made the bold announcement that for the first time in history, the torch will be passed to an ethnic Spidey, one who is half-black and half-latino. Cue the tries of ‘DEY TOOK OUR JOBS’ – but it’s an interesting choice. Considering how many minorities live in major cities, it’s amazing that there haven’t been more out fighting crime. A more interesting choice? It’s amazing how many super-criminals in comic books are portrayed as white, because I guess Marvel and DC writers think there’s no way a black scientist could be messing in a lab and then accidentally turn himself into a superhero. The new Spiderman? Miles Morales, nerd.
The new Brooklyn-dwelling hero can be found in Marvel Comics’ Ultimate Fallout Issue 4. Peter Parker kicked the bucket in Ultimate Spider-Man Issue 160 in June.
I think it’s a great choice, and one that’ll open up a whole new can of storylines.

This makes me happy beyond belief! I love superhero characters and obviously Peter Parker will always be the originale, but this is such an inspirational change! I hope Hollywood will take notice and realize that people of all races want to be the hero once in awhile.

I'm actually having mixed emotions with this move from Marvel. I adored Peter Parker, and even Ben Reilly, but having him killed off was a tearjerker, and then replaced by someone I don't even know? I'm a bit saddened. But I'm also a little happy because they decided to use a half-black and half-mexican, meaning it's not the generic Peter Parker, not a clone, it's a totally new person.
