What a sad, sad weekend this has been for everyone who enjoys well-thought-out stories and genuine efforts.
Because they’re not always rewarded by the movie-going public. As in Cowboys and Aliens being BEATEN this weekend by The Smurfs. The SMURFS. Well, not beaten – tied. For 36.2 million dollars, putting Cowboys and Aliens as a firm disappointment and The Smurfs as a shocking almost-upset. A movie that managed to almost get a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Are parents that exhausted caring for their kids that they don’t want to take them to something decent? That terrifies me. Parenting must be unbelievably hard. If they throw their kids in the theaters at the first sign of talking animals or Adam Sandler, I can’t imagine what their home life is like. Just, constant screaming, pooping on everything, spilling drinks in people’s hair – only a constantly shifting state of interminable hell would be enough to make me drag my family to see The Smurfs. But apparently enough people did that this weekend to split what Cowboys and Aliens WOULD’VE made with no competition.
I just, I can’t even imagine. People willingly gave the people who made a remake of The Smurfs their money. We are so, so bored.
