Reggie Bush is Swimmin’ With the Dolphins

By James Sheldon on July 28th, 2011

I can’t speak for all sports nerds, but I believe this NFL lockout has made the last week of July one of the most exciting sports business weeks in modern sports history. The baseball trade deadline combined with a rush at NFL free agents? C’mon. I’m a kid in at a fireworks stand.

In a move to free up $11.8 million in cap space, the New Orleans Saints traded Reggie Bush to Miami for draft picks and a little cash. Paying Bush nearly 12 million for this season’s services simply wasn’t an option for New Orleans, especially considering the stable of running backs and wide receivers that the Saints already possess.

Ultimately, the move allowed the Saints to immediately re-sign WR Lance Moore, who agreed to a 5-year extension. Saints fans see the immediate value in the move, and no doubt, so does Reggie Bush.

Bush is now heading to a Dolphins squad that will be able to showcase his ability in frequent Wildcat formations. He’ll more than likely get 7-10 more carries per game, greatly increasing his opportunity to do what he does best–bust big plays. And did I fail to mention…? He structured a 2 year deal with Miami worth 10 million, and more than likely some incentives. Everyone’s gotta have those incentives.

I doubt there is any love lost between either party. As a Saints fan, I certainly thank Reggie for his time in New Orleans. We all know he wanted the ball more in the Saints scheme, but he never complained about his role. He was also a key piece in the Saints first Super Bowl title, and for that, fans are forever grateful.
