Amy Winehouse Dies At 27

By Mark Lorenz on July 23rd, 2011

What a waste. What a genuinely talented person she was.

A lot of jokes have already been made about the premature passing of Amy Winehouse, 27. Much will be made of her age, she now joins a contingent that spans much of the popular music spectrum. Many jokes have already been told; most notable – that she should’ve gone to rehab. That the fact that she was addicted somehow lessens her worth as a human being. But what needs to be remembered is that in the brief time where she was putting out records – she and her team basically changed the approach of  female pop artists, touched the worlds of fashion and music, and cast light on the now dwindling space occupied by the girl groups of the 50’s and 60’s.

She only recorded two albums, but Back to Black managed to garner the most Grammy’s ever won by a British recording artist, five, including Best New Artist, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. The real tragedy? She had so much potential. That voice could cut through decades, and it’s absolutely tragic she won’t have any more of those to give to her family, her fans, or the world.

Rest in peace, Amy.
